This is an exciting part of the Cross Culture family. The Freedom Centre is a multi-purpose facility that exists to create opportunities for anyone looking to learn interesting skills, develop a career and be part of a vibrant team. The centre brings together the youth and women of Kolkata, helping each one of them develop a new skill and subsequently get placed into a career. Through this, they are able to earn a steady stream of income, thereby making them less of a burden to their families and communities.
The Freedom Centre currently equips young adults with spoken English and computer skills, and also provides beauty-technician and sewing courses. By learning these skills, the community are better able to create opportunities for a good career. Through the football training offered, young women and men are able to participate in a sport they love, learn new football tricks and enjoy playing as a team. The Centre also runs medical camps for the community so that they can receive basic medical attention and learn basic hygiene and prevention techniques against the scourges found in slums.
Vision Rescue is a mobile classroom and branch of a Mumbai-based NGO that has its mission to offer quality informal education to underprivileged communities. Children are taught essential skills through subjects like Math, English, Hindi, personal development, games and art.
In addition to education, our team also provide food to every student who comes to study on the bus— a nutritious meal before they go home. This way, we are able to cater to the needs of their minds and bodies. We have already begun seeing an impactful change in the lives of children through Vision Rescue.
This project has enabled us to take informal education to communities that have had difficulties accessing formal school education in Kolkata. It is a delight for us to see kid's eyes light up whenever they see the Vision Rescue bus come into their communities.
A crucial focus of Cross Culture is that we empower children to study and work toward their dreams. We believe that education is an effective way to get entire families out of their poverty cycle.
Educare is an informal education centre, standing in the community that it serves— providing free school preparation for children below 14 who have dropped out or have never been to a mainstream school. We want to give them the edge they need to get into schools and continue in education during their prime childhood years. Our goal through Educare is to prepare children who live in impoverished neighbourhoods for mainstream school. Given that schools can be fiercely competitive, some of the children in slum communities need a way to improve their skills before entering the classroom.
We employ teachers to go through the basics in Mathematics, English, and GK. This is in coordination with hygiene lessons and medical camps to care for the immediate needs of their health and wellbeing. All of this serves to empower our city’s children to study toward their dreams.
